Just so you folks know. The island was divided and deeded to slaves through an order written by General Sherman after the Civil War with the authority granted to him by President Abraham Lincoln. However, R.J. Reynolds swindled the vast majority out of their land. Many times through intimidation. In essence, Reynolds was a tyrant and a crook. After Lincoln was killed what land was left was taken from many of the former slaves by whites who claimed the land as their own. Only a few family's of ancestral slaves still have deeds. Some that had land taken are still fightin to get it back. Listen to Podcast "Uncivil" Deeds.
